Before we go any further, we need to know what type of account is it and how does it help you and your ecommerce business.

Merchant account:

It is such a bank account with which you can accept credit or debit card payments. With its help, the transactions made by your customers can be processed smoothly and in this way you can provide a fulfilling experience to your customers. Such transactions can be done by various methods such as by the use of debit card, credit card, online payment or payment by phone.

Advantages of merchant account:

It is quite common to see online stores selling everything from a paper pin to residential houses on the Internet. How this is made possible? This is done entirely with the help of this type of account. Below are provided some advantages of this account:

Ease of operation:

The customers can use their credit or debit card easily to purchase goods or services. They need not to carry cash in their pockets to do so. Payment for goods or services that have been purchased gets made in a few seconds and the customer can use the service or the product within few days or even hours.

  • Safety: These days, enough measures are being placed everywhere so that the hackers are not successful in stealing critical credit card information to cheat the customers. Many ways of secure online transfer are being used which ensure complete peace of mind.
  • Increase in reach: Any business that accepts credit cards for processing orders can sell goods online at any place in the world. A user sitting in Australia can buy a service from a service provider who might be located anywhere in Europe. Once the payment is made by the user, the access to the service bought by him/her starts immediately. The customer needs not to go into details of cash exchange as these are handled automatically. In this way an online business can extend its reach to all around the globe with help of a merchant account.

Types of charges:

Holder of a merchant account needs to pay various types of charges which can be levied on every transaction, interchange of cards, authorization or monthly and annual charges. Two of the most important charges are discussed here.

  • Authorization Fee: Whenever a credit card issuing bank is asked to verify a particular transaction, it charges a certain amount which is called authorization fee.
  • Batch Fee: All transactions during a day need to be processed in the form of batches. Every time such batches are sent to the credit card issuing bank, the merchant needs to pay a certain amount towards batch fee.
