How cheap is cheap?
When a new online business owner goes shopping for merchant account providers, chances are that they will start their search online. Fire up any search engine, type in the appropriate phrases and you will be presented with hundreds of thousands, if not millions of results that will make it difficult for the merchants to decide which provider to sign up for. Of course, there ARE merchants who filter the results and try to obtain the cheapest quotes from providers, and most companies are overtly eager for the business that they refrain from telling the merchants what they need to know.

So how cheap is cheap, a merchant would ask. We’d like to warn newbie merchants not to believe every ad they see. The advertised rates are not always the cheapest. They are put up by salespeople eager to have you sign up with their company.

Beware rogue salespeople
Unscrupulous merchant account providers may tempt you with a seemingly cheap rate. Just when you think you can congratulate yourself for acquiring a cheap merchant account, you find that a load of fees will be piled onto you. Percentage rates, transaction fees, statement charges – they are all necessary evils that you need to pay but the least these companies can do is to tell you about them beforehand!

Don’t fall for discount rates that easily too. Most times there are tons of terms and conditions attached to it. Some are only applicable for a limited period of time.

Another common practice one should be aware of is the fact that some merchant providers force merchants to sign up for a very long term contract. That way they are tied to the contract for ages and if they want to opt out, they need to pay an expensive termination fee.

Seek the solution
The main solution that you can employ to avoid dirty tactics when seeking cheap merchant accounts is to speak to the providers themselves. Never be pressured into signing up – only do so when you are absolutely and 100% sure.
