A common grudge held by most merchants is that the merchant account providers are looting them with their hidden fees et al. Is it really true? Not quite. Let’s see why.
Hidden fees

There’s an article right here posted recently that covers some of the hidden, and not so hidden, fees charged by merchants. This is what they mainly include:

Transaction Fees
Set-up fees
Credit Card related fees
Assessment fee
Discount rate
Minimum monthly discount fee

Do these fees mean the merchants are trying to get their hands into your pocket? Not really. Remember that these account providers ...

Not really. Remember that these account providers also have to pay their own fees to credit card companies. How can they cover these? By passing them off to you, of course. And it is a business for them, which means they need to make a profit. So they add a certain margin. Fees like Non-qualified Credit Card fee, cross-border payment fee, monthly minimum discount rate are levied by necessity rather than out of greediness.

Consider this: third party merchant account providers do not usually levy any minimum monthly discount fee. Does this mean they are kind men running a charity? Not quite. They make even more money, in fact. Direct merchant account providers need to levy these ridiculous fees so that they can meet their targets. They can’t pay credit card companies from their own pockets, can they?

They make it easy for you

Imagine how easy your life becomes because of these merchant account providers. For that, isn’t it worth it to pay some fee? It’s not like you are paying the sun and the moon for their services. You are paying less than 5% per sale in the long run if you combine all kinds of fees. For this measly amount, you can start accepting payment from all over the world. From running a mom and pop shop on the corner of a street, you can start selling things globally and build an empire for yourself. For this, you still think 5% is too much? From making $100 a day without a merchant account, wouldn’t you rather make $1000 and then pay 5% of it? You are not losing $20 by doing so. You are gaining $880. You should be thanking your merchant account provider.

They are running a business, not a charity

There’s no free lunch, really. You can’t expect them to provide you cheap accounts and run themselves into the ground. They are running a business just like you are. They need to make profits, wouldn’t you agree? After paying the credit card companies and the government, they don’t really make as much off you as you imagine.

It’s time online merchants stopped complaining about merchant account providers and started thanking them for the services they provide. The next time you feel frustrated, just remember that they are businessmen like you, and are actually helping you grow, not stifling you.

With the introduction of the merchant accounts, now it has become really easy for the merchants to expand their business globally. Merchant accounts are basically the services provided by the banks and financial institutions. They provide the service to the merchants by processing the payments received from the customers. It has provided them wings to fly high in this market. It has provided them a global platform where they sell and buy goods for the expansion of their business. Sensing the huge demand in this sector, the banks and financial institutions has developed various categories of merchant accounts. They have developed them according to the various needs and requirements of the retailers.

The needs and requirements of a retailer or a business owner determine the type of merchant account he/she must possess. It is quite usual to own multiple merchant accounts, which fulfills the different needs of the account holder. Therefore, let’s have a look at the different types of merchant account available for the retailers around the world.

Retail merchant accounts

They are the most preferred type of merchant accounts people go for. The reason behind is the lowest transaction fees, which usually attracts the customers. But it is also true that it also has the highest number of restrictive rules coupled with them. It also has a rule that around 70% of the sales have to be made through the credit card payments, and the credit card has to be physically swiped through a credit card terminal. This type of merchant account is usually associated with the businesses like grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.

MOTO merchant accounts

MOTO (Mail Order Telephone Order) merchant account is usually used in the situations when a retailer cannot receive payments by swiping the credit card through the credit card terminal. In comparison to the retail merchant account, MOTO merchant account has higher transaction rates. This type of merchant account is usually possessed by those companies who generally accept payments through mails or telephone.

In this process, the merchants swipe the credit card through a credit card terminal which also contains a keypad. They enter the details into the terminal through the keypad. The terminal is usually connected to a virtual terminal or to a computer, which in turn is connected to the internet.

Internet merchant account

Internet account is quite similar to the MOTO merchant accounts in terms of cost and rules. Most of the banks offer MOTO merchant account, but some of them also offer the internet merchant account which offers a different gateway to the account holders. The gateway can be used for the processing of payments through the credit card.

Mobile or Wireless merchant account

This type of merchant account is gaining popularity these days, which offers processing of payments through the mobile. It is for those business people who are constantly on the move. It comes with low fees and higher discount rates,

Apart from them, there are also some categories to meet the desired requirements. Some of them are Hotel/Lodging, Petroleum/Pay at the Pump, and High Volume Processing.

Wireless credit card processing is an electronic means of sending payments or receiving funds through the internet for goods bought or for services rendered.
What is it?

Wireless credit card processing is an electronic means of sending payments or receiving funds through the internet for goods bought or for services rendered. It is a mostly used by internet marketers who have found means of gaining fortunes through the internet. Similarly, retailers also find delight in using it to make fast payments to get their goods delivered on time.

The use of credit cards can be traced back to the 1950’s when the Diners Club of America made the first invention. After a few years, other brands known as VISA, Master Card, Discover and American Express were made.

To the online buyer, the credit card is used by inserting it into a machine which reads the magnetic strip on it. Doing this enables the company to obtain useful information about the card. If the card has enough funds to make the transactions, the amount will be deducted from the balance on the card after a confirmation has been sent by the buyer. Another type of wireless credit card processing is the phone processing. Phone processing uses touchtone telephones. Touchtone telephones may be land lines or cell phones. Payment processing is done by dialing 800. Processing successfully requires that the customer’s card details: number, date of expiration and the amount payable are supplied. The phone processing option has the advantage of canceling transactions and making refunds to the cards.

The importance

Accepting wireless credit card processing for a company enables it to trade globally-increasing its profits. It also makes the business grow beyond one’s wildest imagination. This is typical of established online sites such as eBay.

Installing systems for credit cards as a means of accepting payment is not expensive at all. Only about $10-$20 in addition to discount rates are charged on the company. Discount rates are only a fraction of the company’s sales. They range around 1.69% and 2.19% for offline and online companies respectively. Mobile merchant accounts do not need to have a certain amount of money before being eligible to apply for credit card processing. Accepting credit cards online gives the business a unique recognition on the internet and even offline. Customers prefer shopping with companies that accept credit cards because they believe that their money/transaction is much safer since the transaction taking place is recorded. Owing to the cumbersome nature of carrying cash, buyers like to purchase their goods by using credit cards which are light and convenient to carry about. Credit cards have gained more trust in the minds of most online merchants compared to bank wire transfers (such as Western Union) and PayPal.

How to go about it?

The first basic step to take to accept credit card processing is contacting a credit card processing company to eliminate the difficulties on the part of the company. The next step is to get a mobile merchant account which accepts the funds from the customer’s credit card. After this, the company can progress to a credit card processing company with details of the kind of services needed. For instance, the company may want to diversify her income potentials by taking orders via the phone, internet or offline as well. The company/business may also decide on the kind of credit card they may want to accept.

We have already given 10 tips on minimizing eCommerce Fraud Exposure. But it’s not just about spending money on fraud detection/prevention systems. You first need to understand the kinds of fraud you can be exposed to. Only then can you figure out the ways to save yourself from them.

Detect the type of fraud

The most advanced criminals will give you a fake card or a card obtained via skimming. There is little you can do in such cases since the criminals themselves practice fraud as a means of earning a living and are very good at it. Other difficult to track fraudsters are those that use Credit Card Generators, sophisticated software that generates fake CC information.

What you will face more often, however, is a kind of fraud where the customer will claim he never placed any order, or never received it. Another kind of fraud you can be exposed to is a Card Not Present (CNP) fraud. Here the purchaser has no physical card.

How can you identify frauds?

A big sign will be multiple orders being placed for the same item over a short period of time, or even orders being placed for multiple items at a rate faster than you are used to. Unless you have invested in advertising, there is little reason for order volume to go up suddenly. If you spot such a change then, rather than being pleased with your luck, you should hit the panic button and try to figure out why there are so many orders. More likely than not, you are being tried to be victimized by a fraudster.

Another sign to look for is inaccurate addresses. An address with only a P.O. Box number rather than a full address is riskier. Also, if you have the time and resources, look up the address provided before shipping. If it seems suspicious, like an old abandoned building, then it’s best to refuse the order.

Lastly, if your customer is using a free email id, request verification via other means, such as faxing over required information. It’s very easy to create a fake email id to place an order then discard it forever.

Use systems like AVS and IVR and always get a signed receipt

AVS is widely used already for fraud prevention. A lesser used method, however, is IVR systems like VoiceStamps. Such systems can be used to aurally record your customers’ placing the order. If the customer later claims that he/she never placed the order, you have proof that he/she indeed did place it. Also, have your customer sign an acknowledgement of receipt and get a copy of the acknowledgement. That way your customer cannot claim that the order wasn’t delivered.

Being aware of the various methods you can be victimized can go a long way in preventing fraud. Most times, you need to take simple methods to prevent cases of fraudulent transactions. Of course, there is only so much you can do in cases of stolen credit cards and the like, but there is definitely no reason why you shouldn’t work on preventing other kinds of fraud.

He found that most adults would hesitate to enter an adult store to buy some toys or movies for themselves. They are more open to buying online. Not a new idea, by any means, but it was profitable. So he set up a site and started selling things online. He got himself a merchant account to process credit cards and shipped the products to customers. Now, the bigger problem was with the movies. It seemed that husbands didn’t want their wives to know what they had been watching and contested the charges on their credit cards, resulting in chargebacks. Before Joe had managed to make any real headway with his venture, his merchant account was shut down because of the high reversal rates.

Enter High Risk Merchant Accounts

Joe is not any guy in particular. His story is similar to what thousands of enterprising individuals encounter as they go about their ambition of setting up their online business. The problem is, standard merchant account providers don’t like to see chargebacks. This is where High Risk Merchant Accounts come into the picture. As against the low allowed chargeback rates on standard merchant accounts, High Risk accounts can allow as much as a 6% chargeback before they finally shut down your account for good. It is clear that if Joe had applied for a High Risk Merchant Account, his business would have lasted a lot longer and with fewer headaches.

Do you need them?

If yours is any of the high risk businesses listed here, then yes, you need a high risk account. High Risk Merchant Accounts help you carry on with your business without worrying too much about credit card payment reversals. A 6% roof is high enough for almost all businesses. In most cases, you will not even be accepted for a standard account if you run a high risk business.

Aren’t the Fees and Fraud higher?

Not really. First of all, considering you don’t have a choice, the higher fees aren’t that big a deal. At least you get to have your own merchant account and the ability to process credit cards. It’s not like the fees are monstrously high, either. They are usually just a percent or two higher than standard account fees. As for your fear of fraud, High Risk Merchant Account providers have qualified teams to guard against fraud so that you can rest easy.

So that means I can do whatever I want?

No. Getting a High Risk Merchant Account involves a procedure just a thorough as required when obtaining a standard account. You will still need to do your best to lower your risk of chargebacks. Hit 1%, and you get a questing look from your provider. Hit 2%, and you get a notice in your mail. Hit 3-5% and your provider starts really annoying you. 6%, and you can bid adieu to your account.

This generally happens for many reasons. Without going deep into the reasons, let’s have a look at the different circumstances which can lead to the chargeback kind of situation.

Chargebacks

There are basically four cases where account holders can chargeback on PayPal for the disputes or misplacement of funds.

Account holders can chargeback on PayPal if an unauthorized payment was made from their card. If the account holders can find any anomaly in their PayPal account, they have a right to chargeback on PayPal.

The second case where account holders can chargeback on PayPal is when the account holder or the buyer does not receive the item that was paid for. Sometimes it happens that a buyer has already paid for the item through his/her PayPal account, but the item was not delivered to him/her.

Sometimes it also happens that an error occurs in the middle of a transaction. This usually happens due to technical glitch. In this case account holders can chargeback on PayPal.

There are some cases when account holders pay for a certain item through their PayPal account, but surprisingly, they do not receive the same item. This can be really frustrating, especially for those who are new to PayPal.

So, these were the four prime situations which grant the right to the account holders to chargeback on PayPal. Though PayPal has provided these options to its account holders, but if we go back into the records, we will notice that these chargeback do help the account holders, but it usually takes a long time to settle the matter.

Protecting yourself

Getting into the trap of the scammers is also a major concern for the PayPal account holders. Though it is nearly impossible to get rid from the fraudsters and cyber criminals, there are some ways which can help you to stay away from these kinds of nuisance. There are few rules and tips that you must follow for safeguarding the privacy of your account.

While opening an account in PayPal, you should always produce correct and relevant information. Accurate information helps PayPal to verify the details in a better way. It means that your account becomes safer. In the same way, you should not transact with buyers or seller without any verification.

You should always try to avoid making high value transactions with your PayPal account.

If you have not received the item for which you have made a payment through your PayPal account, you should report it immediately to PayPal.

Avoid keeping high balances in your PayPal account.

Before you make or accept payment through PayPal, you should read all the terms and conditions carefully, and this is a very good practice.

PayPal has always been the first choice of most of the internet users around the world. They prefer PayPal more than anyone to carry out their financial transaction for online money transfer service. Well, it is quite obvious because no other financial company offers the same level of satisfaction to its customers. PayPal provides pretty good security features to its customers. But sometimes, there are some common mistakes which people make while using PayPal. It is better to identify the mistakes well in time. Otherwise, it can lead to big problems.
To make you aware of the common mistakes, and to help you out with the possible solution, let’s have a brief look at the five most mistakes while using PayPal.

1. Not paying proper heed to Money Market Fund:

Some people do not take the trouble to activate PayPal’s Money Market Fund. It has the power to change your current PayPal account to interest bearing savings account. You should know there is no minimum balance criterion for joining the Money Market Fund. It means that you do not have to maintain a minimum balance to avail the benefits of Money Market Fund. So, there is no reason to avoid this facility.

2. Avoid money withdraw after 5pm PST/PDT:

Most people do not think about the importance of withdrawal time. If you withdraw money from your PayPal account to your bank account after 5pm, the money hangs in between the PayPal account and your bank account. This stage is known as “in transit” situation. It means that the money is neither of the account. As a result, neither you will get the interest from your bank, nor you will get any benefits of Money Market Fund for that amount of money. But if you withdraw the money during the banking hours, it will definitely help you to save some money.

3. Don’t be credulous:

Some people easily trust links and emails related to their PayPal account. PayPal does not ask for any personal details through emails or any kind of links. Therefore you should never provide any kind of personal details. The most important thing you need to keep in mind is that you should never try to access PayPal account via email or links. The suspicious links can direct you to the fake or dummy websites, where you will be asked to enter the account name and password, which means big trouble.

4. Don’t ever link your PayPal account with your Primary Checking account:

You should never link your PayPal account with your Primary Checking account, even accidently. Though chances of this kind is situation is very rare, but you should always be prepared for this kind of situation. You will never want PayPal to have access to your account, which includes your rent, mortgage, and other kind of bills.

5. Don’t mix up your personal account with business account:

some people use their personal account to make payments for professional services. This is a very bad practice which can lead to problems related to the security of the account. Hence, it should be avoided at any cost.

PayPal plays with Indians

One of the most reason examples is the Paypal fiasco in India starting in February 2010. All of a sudden, Indians found their payments received through Paypal being reversed with little

explanation. Paypal soon sent a mail explaining that all personal payments made by or to Indians were being reversed. They offered no reason for this except a vague “we are in talks with our partners.” Needless to say, they were accused of racism back then. They then followed it up by temporarily disallowing withdrawals to Indian banks, though this was solely due to a complaint by the Government of India. What is important to note that payment processors have your money in their fist. They can choose what to do with it any time they want and can change policies in the blink of an eye.

Chargebacks

A huge menace with such sites is the number of chargebacks sellers have to face, with little protection. For online services there is almost nothing you can do to contest a chargeback. E-commerce businesses will readily reverse any payment if a buyer so requests. It’s not the buyer who has to provide proof, it’s the seller who has to do it. This means that thousands of ‘buyers’ end up getting stuff for free while the seller can only mumble in disgust.

For example, here is a person who lost close to $400 and had his account blocked while AlertPay ‘investigated’ a fraudulent transaction claim. Such posts are scarily too common.

They have their hands in your pocket…and bank account!

Once you sign up for an internet payment site like Paypal or AlertPay and link your bank account or credit card they can do almost anything they wish. See this case of a person losing more than $100 because PayPal reversed his withdrawal to his bank, that too for no apparent reason. In such cases, they are not liable for anything. Would Paypal have done this if the Rupee had strengthened against the Dollar? Probably not. At least we haven’t heard of such a case yet.

It’s not the websites…it’s the people on the other end of the wire.

For all the hatred we posses about these sites, it’s really the few users who use these sites to scam people that we should be complaining about. These sites provide an invaluable service to society – that of easily transferring money from one point to another. Users have found ways to scam people using the short-comings of these sites. For example, there are stories of people selling things they don’t even own, using the advantage provided by MoneyBookers in such transactions. This would not work on Paypal, since the buyer could issue a chargeback. So what is often a shortcoming on Paypal (chargebacks) can sometimes be an advantage. We cannot blame the sites for following the policies they do. Besides, they really are working hard to improve their services so that there might be a day when you will have no cause to complain.
